OCD: More Than Just Cleaning and Organizing
When most people hear the term OCD, they think of someone who’s overly neat, constantly cleaning, or obsessed with keeping things perfectly organized. While these behaviors can be part of obsessive-compulsive disorder, they’re just a small piece of the picture.
As a therapist in Prosper Texas specializing in OCD treatment for children, teens, and adults, I help clients understand the full reality of OCD—and it’s far more complex than stereotypes suggest.
What Is OCD?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a mental health condition involving two key parts:
Obsessions: Unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that create distress or anxiety.
Compulsions: Repetitive behaviors or mental actions done to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessions.
These can look very different from person to person.
Common OCD Themes Beyond Cleaning
Harm OCD: Fear of accidentally harming yourself or others.
Relationship OCD: Constant doubt about your feelings or your partner.
Existential OCD: Obsessions about life’s meaning, death, or reality.
Contamination OCD: Fear of germs, chemicals, or illness (not always about dirt).
“Just Right” OCD: Needing things to feel symmetrical or perfect to reduce discomfort.
Religious or Moral OCD: Fear of sinning, offending God, or violating moral rules.
Why OCD Is Misunderstood
Pop culture often focuses on visible compulsions like excessive cleaning, but many people with OCD have Pure-O (purely obsessional) symptoms—where the struggle happens almost entirely in their mind. These can be harder to spot, but just as distressing.
Effective Treatment for OCD
The most effective, evidence-based treatments for OCD include:
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) – Gradually facing feared situations without engaging in compulsions.
Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT) – Learning to recognize and step outside of OCD’s imagined “what if” scenarios.
At Hope Springs Counseling and Consulting, PLLC, I offer both ERP and I-CBT for clients ages 5 and up. Together, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan to help you break free from OCD’s cycle and live with more peace and freedom.
